What does it mean to be a fan?
Silas and his first game.
What does it mean to be a fan? The question is always on my mind. Well, a fan is always willing to do what most won't do. Such as... check the score on your phone even though it may cost you an arm and a leg, listen to the game on the radio when you have no reception, trying to make out what the announcer is saying over the static and mexican music. or watching pitch by pitch on the computer with just a stick man and a ten second delay. A true fan can only love one team and devote his sport life to it. He does this by wearing his teams colors (red). A true fan goes to the game not to socialize, but to work... mentally. Not to stuff himself with food and spend the whole time in a line or play with beach balls. A true fan does not do the wave because he knows that every play is so important. A true fan is always willing to admit when a player is not doing well. For instance, let's take Garett Anderson. Great player, but he is a lazy man! If you ever want to see a true walk to first, then watch Garett. A regular fan will say he is great because of a home run he saw on the ESPN news, but a true fan will bring out the worst. This is a psychological thing true fans do to connect with the players to get them motivated. It's like the FORCE in Star Wars. A true fan walks around with a headset during the season and brings that headset to the game. True fans will stay to the last minute, whether the score is 10 to 1 or 0 to 15. A true fan, if married, will have to sleep on the couch sometimes because of the things he chooses to put first. And last, you know you're a true fan when you have nothing left in you and it's the bottom of the tenth and you're on your knees on beer-infested ground with peanut shells imbedded in your skin begging God to give you that base hit so you can sleep well tonight. This is a true fan. One who invests his time not in stock or wealth, but in a team. That's why a true fan can say things like "WE won last night " or "WE have a game today". Putting themselves in the team because without fans there would not be a team. There would be no rally, there would be no true fans. Why do we do it? Well, why do people invest in stock? Why do people add to ther homes or go to school to be a doctor? They do this to invest. To invest in the future, so that one day they will look back on all that hard work and say, "It is finished". As a fan we to invest our time, our money, we take the risk of getting beat up at a Dodger game and trying to convert a Yankee fan. Yes we invest to see our team do it's best and when the game is over and the victory is won can you say "I AM A TRUE FAN".
